Final Blog_Peer Tutoring

Peer Tutoring
M.A.D Post Project
Jane Lee

Make a Difference Project, "Peer Tutoring" was to help and strengthen the international students' weakness; English. During our first week of our project, we looked for schools and heard about after school programs offered in Mount Carmel School. Then quickly reached to their vice principal and got approved to volunteer for the students. These students were mostly Chinese and Korean that were failing their vocabulary test. So my group mates and I decided to tutor these students by focusing on vocabulary development, memorization and individual skills. Throughout our eight days of tutoring, surely there were tough situations. First of all, it was very hard communicate with the Chinese students and to keep 7th graders on focus. Secondly, teaching unmotivated students were the main problem that we had to face. Because of this, we used games like Pictionary and flashcards to entertain them have interest in vocabulary words and tips on memorizing. This brilliant exploit aced their test that dramatically tripled their grades which made this project definitely successful.

If I were to do this project next year or in the summer, I would differently work with more tutees and tutors and use same strategies of teaching. Also not only working with international students, it will be great to work with any students that need help. This will be a great opportunity to help more students to engage on their school activities.

I would like to encourage other people to support students, friends, or anyone with their knowledge. Me, myself will continue to help these international or any students that needs help throughout my life journey. As much as I can help, I would love to be their guidance. To conclude, helping out the community will inspire and motivate others to help one another.

  8. My next action is….

  1. I have accomplished all the tutoring session and the t.e.d talk.
  2. Nothing has gone wrong! Everything went so fast and perfect.
  3. One challenges I faced was the t.e.d talk. I was so nervous that I think i stuttered too much.
  4. Through this process I have learned that speaking in front of a crowd is not easy. It was very tough and I was so nervous.
  5. There are no skills that I have improved but through the experience of t.e.d talk, I think I can prepare better for another talk someday.
  6. Yes, I am on time delivery. I finished the tutoring and t.e.d talk on the right time. I have one more thing to do for this M.A.D project and I am finally done.
  7. There is no adjustment that is needed to be made on the timeline.
  8. My next action is to do the final reflection next week Monday and get 34 people to comment on it.

  2. Three of the tutees studied during the spring break but one did not. She was not motivated to study.
  3. The challenge I have faced was that there was only one day to get them ready for the test because we meet them twice a week but their test is on Friday and I meet them on Tuesday and Friday. So it was challenging to help them with two chapters of vocabulary.
  4. Through helping them fast as they can I also learned new vocabularies in short time. I also learned some new skills to memorize better.
  5. My skills have not improved past week because there was no tutoring last week.
  6. Yes, I am on track for an on-time delivery.
  7. I have no other adjustment that is needed to be made on the timeline.

  1. I have accomplished the goal by visiting Mount Carmel School explaining what our project is and asking if they need our help for tutoring.
  2. Mount Carmel School did not give me any reply which they said they will.
  3. The challenges that I have faced is that there are not enough time to go to a school to ask because the school ends at 3 o'clock and the other school ends at the same time. Also when I visited Mount Carmel School the teachers were in meeting so I had to wait for along time till they were finished.
  4. I have learned that the time consuming is the most important part and difficult.
  5. No I did not improve any skills past week.
  6. Yes, I am always checking my email if Mount Carmel School sent me a reply.
  7. Adjustment needed in the timeline is that I might have to start the tutoring later until they give me a reply.
  8. My next action is to visit Mount Carmel School again next week as soon as possible.
