Make a Difference Project,
"Peer Tutoring" was to help and strengthen the international
students' weakness; English. During our first week of our project, we looked
for schools and heard about after school programs offered in Mount Carmel
School. Then quickly reached to their vice principal and got approved to
volunteer for the students. These students were mostly Chinese and Korean that
were failing their vocabulary test. So my group mates and I decided to tutor
these students by focusing on vocabulary development, memorization and
individual skills. Throughout our eight days of tutoring, surely there were
tough situations. First of all, it was very hard communicate with the Chinese
students and to keep 7th graders on focus. Secondly, teaching unmotivated
students were the main problem that we had to face. Because of this, we used
games like Pictionary and flashcards to entertain them have interest in
vocabulary words and tips on memorizing. This brilliant exploit aced their test
that dramatically tripled their grades which made this project definitely
successful.
If I were to do this project next year
or in the summer, I would differently work with more tutees and tutors and use
same strategies of teaching. Also not only working with international students,
it will be great to work with any students that need help. This will be a great
opportunity to help more students to engage on their school activities.
"Understanding, Confidence, Progress."
