Peer Tutoring
M.A.D Post Project
Jane Lee

Make a Difference Project, "Peer Tutoring" was to help and strengthen the international students' weakness; English. During our first week of our project, we looked for schools and heard about after school programs offered in Mount Carmel School. Then quickly reached to their vice principal and got approved to volunteer for the students. These students were mostly Chinese and Korean that were failing their vocabulary test. So my group mates and I decided to tutor these students by focusing on vocabulary development, memorization and individual skills. Throughout our eight days of tutoring, surely there were tough situations. First of all, it was very hard communicate with the Chinese students and to keep 7th graders on focus. Secondly, teaching unmotivated students were the main problem that we had to face. Because of this, we used games like Pictionary and flashcards to entertain them have interest in vocabulary words and tips on memorizing. This brilliant exploit aced their test that dramatically tripled their grades which made this project definitely successful.

If I were to do this project next year or in the summer, I would differently work with more tutees and tutors and use same strategies of teaching. Also not only working with international students, it will be great to work with any students that need help. This will be a great opportunity to help more students to engage on their school activities.

I would like to encourage other people to support students, friends, or anyone with their knowledge. Me, myself will continue to help these international or any students that needs help throughout my life journey. As much as I can help, I would love to be their guidance. To conclude, helping out the community will inspire and motivate others to help one another.

"Understanding, Confidence, Progress."

  1. Great job Jane! I bet you felt the pain your tutees felt when you first went to school in Saipan. If you did, I like how you used your experience to help others because you know what it's like to go through English as a second language. I especially liked the way you approached your tough situations. As a dual language major, I do understand how difficult it is to teach a language to people who are forced to learn it or are just unmotivated by the language itself. The method you chose was perfect and there are many resources in the internet that you can utilize to help improve their proficiency. I hope you can expand this project to help more students in need of a tutor. Good job!

  4. It is great to see that you are working to help those students who are in need of help. As an international student myself, I believe that your hard work came very meaningfully to them as language barrier is a painful obstacle when it comes to education, especially in a foreign country. The data seems to support the great significance of your hard works as well. Greatly impressed. I hope this event serves as a motivation for you, me, and many others to work for the ones in need of help without hesitation to "make a difference" in this world.

  10. Although it may seem like it, tutoring others isn't an easy task - especially tutoring 7th graders on English when you are also an ESL student! I'm glad to see such projects being started and how you worked to entertain and motivate your tutees. It may be a small and slow start but I hope that more and more students back home can start helping out too! Great job to you Jane and your fellow tutors as well :)

  13. It seems like you definitely know what you're doing! Although many say that the best way to learn a new language is to surround yourself with people that speak the language, I think a bit of help and guidance is always appreciated. Good job in realizing that to help people out. Keep it up!!

  27. Having some experience if teaching English to international students, I am sure to say you must have had a hard time trying to communicate with the students. It was hard for me to encourage my students, especially without being able to communicate well. You obviously did a great job in doing so seeing the results of the students' grades. Great job and I encourage you to continue on your help for others in the future as well! :)

  28. I think this was a great idea as Saipan continues to become more diverse and students are not familiar with a new language and educational system. It's a good thing you guys attempted to help them understand their work. You guys did your part and if they weren't able to take it seriously then it's not your fault. You tried and did a good job and tried other methods. Great job!
